In 1981, populations of two Polynesian atolls, whose chief source of caloric energy was coconut, were studied. The results were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrating that both populations showed no evidence that the high saturated fat intake had a harmful effect, rather they actually exhibited positive vascular health.

Coconut oil has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties because it contains lauric acid, capric acid, and caprylic acid. It is naturally a saturated oil however, because it contains about 50% lauric acid it does not lead to an increase in cholesterol levels and in fact helps prevent heart problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and also atherosclerosis.

Coconut oil is helpful in losing weight as it is easy to digest and contains short and medium-chain fatty acids, possibly because it supports thyroid function.
