Arthritis is a term that can cover around 100 medical conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system and specifically joints, with the most significant being osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Begin with the following once daily:

  • One tablespoon of pure apple cider vinegar
  • One tablespoon of honey (omit if you have diabetes)
  • Mix in a large glass (16oz) of warm to hot water so honey dissolves

If necessary increase this to twice and then three times daily. Once at three times daily, Hills recommends gradually increasing the amounts of apple cider vinegar and decreasing the honey until the dosage is:

  • One dessertspoon of pure apple cider vinegar
  • One teaspoon of honey
  • Mix in a large glass of warm water

What is Turmeric and Curcumin?

Turmeric is a bright yellow aromatic powder obtained from the rhizome of a plant of the ginger family. It has been used for flavoring and coloring in Indian dishes, and in dyes for over 2500 years. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin and this is what gives turmeric its color and flavor, and also its health benefits.

Turmeric is often touted as one of the best arthritis cures. While you might not get a cure, it will have a positive effect on your general health and reduce inflammation.

By taking curcumin you may be able to reduce anti-inflammatory and pain medication but please, always with the assistance of your health professional. For painful inflammatory forms of arthritis try the following regime:

  • Probiotic supplement before breakfast;
  • One Turmeric (500mg) capsule 15 minutes before breakfast, lunch and dinner;
  • 2000 mg fish oil daily

Side effects of turmeric

As with everything, turmeric should not be taken in excessive quantities. Ask your health professional if in doubt about how much to take. Some negative side effects of turmeric if taken in large quantities are diarrhoea, nausea and sweating (like when you eat too much hot curry!).

If you already suffer from health complaints like congestive heart disease, gallstones, liver disease, jaundice or acute bilious colic it should not be taken.

While turmeric is considered a 'safe' herb, it does have blood thinning and gland stimulating properties. It shouldn't be taken by those with blood clotting disorders that prevent their blood from clotting efficiently and pregnant women should always consult their health professional before taking supplements or medication of any form.
